Sex Offender Registration

Sex offenders present a high risk to commit repeat offenses. Efforts by law enforcement agencies to protect their communities, conduct investigations, and quickly apprehend sex offenders may be impaired by the lack of available information about individuals who have pleaded guilty to or have been found guilty of sex offenses and who live, work, or attend school in their jurisdiction. The Sex Offender Registration Act assists efforts of local law enforcement agencies to protect their communities by requiring sex offenders to register with local law enforcement agencies as provided by the Sex Offender Registration Act.

Generally, anyone deemed to be a sex offender as outlined in the Sex Offender Registration Act is required to register with their local sheriff's department. Registrations must be done whenever there is a change in address, employment, or education status. Annual verification of the offender's status are conducted by mail by the Nebraska State Patrol. It is the responsibility of the sex offender to keep current with registrations. Failure to register or maintain current registration status is a separate criminal offense for which the sex offender may be arrested.

The statutes cited below is not an exhaustive list of all statutes related to sex offenders, and are presented only for educational purposes.
