Changes in Graduated Driver's Licensing Law

Effective January 1, 2008 several changes will go into effect regarding laws that govern the operation of motor vehicles by young persons in Nebraska.

The change which will cause the most concern among young persons will be the following change to laws concerning School Learner's Permits (LPE), School Permits (SCP), Learner's Permits (LPD), and Provisional Operator's Permits (POP):
 
The holder of an LPE-learner's permit shall
not use any type of interactive wireless communication device while
operating a motor vehicle on the highways of this state.
 
A second change to the POP laws states:
 
During the first six (6) months the holder of the POP is limited to more than one passenger who is not an immediate family member and who is under nineteen years of age.
 
Remember, POP licenses are issued to an driver at age sixteen. The reguirements to obtain a non-POP operator's license are:
 
Must be at least seventeen (17) years old and have held a Provisional Operator's Permit (POP) oft a least twelve (12) months or must be eighteen (18) years of age.
